This week is Colorado Journalism Week. It’s more than just a feel good celebration, and we will be devoting this space all week to discuss some very important issues.
Journalism—national and local—is under pressure today. There are business pressures, of course. But the political forces attacking our hard-fought credibility are threatening our very survival. With this in mind, Governor Hickenlooper has proclaimed this week as Colorado Journalism Week.
Here are selected excerpts from the proclamation: “Whereas Colorado Newspaper Week is a statewide initiative that reminds us of the importance of a free press; and Whereas freedom of the press promotes an informed constituency, improves public policy, increases responsiveness and accountability, and enhances public confidence in government institutions; and Whereas Coloradans are this week encouraged to recognize and celebrate our newspapers for their significant and enduring contributions to the civic vitality of our state; I, John W. Hickenlooper, Governor of the State of Colorado, do hereby proclaim the period between April 16, 2018 and April 20, 2018, as Colorado Journalism Week.”
