The holiday season can represent anywhere between 25 and 40 percent of annual retailer sales. By contrast, in 2008 the holidays accounted for only 18.5 percent of total sales. Why the change?  Shoppers were as price conscious during the holidays as they were the rest of the year.

  This is an ongoing trend. Half of consumers recently surveyed by the National Retail Federation said that everyday low prices or sales were the biggest influence in deciding where to shop.
