Local nonprofit Emergency Family Assistance Association (EFAA) has been meeting our community’s basic needs since 1918. It helps families, people with disabilities and seniors by providing assistance with food, rent, furniture, utilities, transportation, minor medical expenses, emergency and transitional housing, and resource referrals.

A big part of the EFAA’s success is thanks to executive director Terry Benjamin, who is retiring after 33 years of service to EFAA and our community. Benjamin was recently honored with the William Funk Award for Building Stronger Communities. He is one of only two Boulder nonprofit leaders who have received this prestigious award since its inception in 1991. The award includes a $5,000 grant from the Boettcher Foundation, which Benjamin has elected to use to match donations to EFAA.

Our hearty congratulations to Benjamin and his impressive body of work at EFAA. In 2012 alone, the organization served 4,540 households, and its shelters housed 126 homeless families.

The Camera is proud to support EFAA, and we encourage you to do the same. There’s never been a better time; thanks to Benjamin’s grant allocation, every contribution to EFAA in the next few weeks will be doubled. Visit efaa.org now to make your donation.
