Like many of us, I’ll be spending Memorial Day weekend celebrating with my family and friends. We’ll be sharing food, libations, stories and laughter. We’ll be watching our kids play.

In many ways, this is a fitting remembrance ritual: spending and appreciating quality time with the people who matter most to me.

Because without the brave soldiers who we honor on this holiday, I wouldn’t have the privilege of these freedoms. It’s a fitting tribute, but it’s not sufficient.

Let’s take some time amidst the grilling and Frisbee, the camping and cavorting, to observe the true meaning of Memorial Day and pay respect to the men and women of the U.S. military who have given their lives in the line of duty.

Visit a memorial. Fly your flag at half-staff until noon. Plant some poppies. Talk to a veteran or an enlisted soldier. Or just stop for a moment to appreciate what so many have given on our behalf.

Happy Memorial Day.
