A record number of ghouls, goblins and mere mortals will be celebrating Halloween this year, according to the National Retail Federation’s (NRF) 2012 Halloween Consumer Intentions and Actions Survey. Seven in 10 Americans (71.5 percent) plan to celebrate Halloween, up from 68.6 percent last year and the most in NRF’s survey history.
Halloween spending is expected to be equally exhilarating, reaching a whopping $8 billion. That breaks down to $1.1 billion on children’s costumes, $1.4 billion on adult costumes, $370 million on pet costumes and the balance on decorations, candy, pumpkins, greeting cards, party supplies and events (haunted house, anyone?). The average person will spend $79.82 on Halloween, up from $72.31 in 2011.
