Colorado Journalism Week presents an opportunity to consider how local journalism serves our community. It provides a place for dialogue, of sharing news and information. It promotes the free exchange of opinions, and a public space for the conversations around the issues that impact us all.

The media, whether print, broadcast or online) is also a significant local employer. Our journalists are members of the community. They shop at local stores, eat at local restaurants, and their kids go to local schools. I am proud to work with some of the best of them.

On Friday, our Daily Camera team took home 25 excellence in journalism awards, including eight first-place honors for general excellence, spot news story and photo, business story and sports column, among others, from the Colorado Associated Press Editors and Reporters.

The Camera took first place for overall general excellence. Our photographers made us proud for their wins in sports and news photography. And several of our writers placed in the top three in multiple categories.

I’m not going to tell you to go out and hug a journalist. But if you see one doing their daily work, take a moment to say “thank you.”
